Astrology basics: signs, planets, houses, aspects and transits 🎧

Astrology becomes much easier to understand when you separate its main building blocks. Signs describe style, planets describe functions, houses describe areas of life, the Ascendant anchors the chart to a specific time and place, aspects show relationships between planets, and transits add a changing time layer.

This podcast is a beginner’s map of those pieces. It is not meant to replace a full natal-chart reading. Its role is to show how the main parts of astrology fit together so you know what to learn next and what each technique is actually used for.

The basic grammar of astrology

A useful beginner’s formula is:

  • Planet = what — the symbolic function involved.
  • Sign = how — the style in which that function is expressed.
  • House = where — the life area in which it becomes especially visible.
  • Aspect = relationship — how two planetary functions interact.
  • Transit = when — which themes are emphasized at a particular time.

That simple framework prevents one of the most common beginner mistakes: treating a birth chart as a collection of isolated labels.

1. Zodiac signs: styles of expression

The twelve zodiac signs are often presented as personality types, but that is an oversimplification. In astrology, a sign is better understood as a style through which a planet expresses its function.

Mars in Aries and Mars in Taurus are both Mars, so both relate symbolically to action, desire and assertion. But Aries gives that function a more immediate, initiating tone, while Taurus emphasizes persistence, continuity and resistance to unnecessary change.

Signs become easier to understand when grouped by element and modality. Fire, earth, air and water describe broad qualities; cardinal, fixed and mutable signs describe different ways of moving, sustaining or adapting.

For a fuller introduction, see our guide to zodiac sign traits and rising signs.

2. The Sun, Moon and Ascendant: three different layers

The popular “Big Three” are useful because they introduce three different parts of the chart.

FactorCommon astrological themesBeginner question
SunIdentity, vitality, conscious directionWhat helps me feel fully engaged and purposeful?
MoonEmotional needs, habits, securityWhat helps me feel safe and emotionally settled?
AscendantApproach, orientation, first response to lifeHow do I instinctively enter situations and meet the world?

The Ascendant, also called the rising sign, is especially important because it depends on the exact time and place of birth. Astronomically, it is the point where the eastern horizon intersects the zodiac. In many Western traditions it also establishes the starting point of the houses and identifies the chart ruler.

It is more useful to think of the Ascendant as an orientation than as a superficial “mask.”

3. Planets: the functions inside the chart

Planets are the symbolic actors of the chart. Each is associated with a family of themes.

PlanetCore themes
SunIdentity, vitality, direction
MoonNeeds, habits, emotional security
MercuryThinking, learning, communication
VenusValues, attraction, pleasure, relating
MarsAction, desire, assertion
JupiterGrowth, meaning, perspective
SaturnLimits, responsibility, time
UranusChange, freedom, disruption
NeptuneImagination, ideals, sensitivity
PlutoIntensity, power, transformation

4. Houses: where the symbolism becomes concrete

The twelve houses divide the chart into areas of experience. The 2nd house is traditionally associated with resources and values, the 4th with roots and home, the 7th with one-to-one relationships, and the 10th with public direction and vocation.

A planet does not change its basic symbolic function when it moves from one house to another; the field of expression changes. Venus in the 5th house and Venus in the 10th house are both Venus, but their themes are emphasized in different parts of life.

5. Aspects: how planets interact

Aspects are angular relationships between planets. The five major aspects are conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition.

A square does not automatically mean “bad,” and a trine does not automatically mean “good.” Aspects describe different kinds of interaction: concentration, cooperation, friction, flow or polarity.

Once you move beyond the basics, factors such as orb, applying versus separating contacts and the planets involved become important. Our dedicated guide to aspects in astrology explains those layers.

6. Natal chart: the fixed reference map

The natal chart, or birth chart, is calculated for the date, time and place of birth. It combines planets, signs, houses, angles and aspects into one map.

Within astrology, the chart is interpreted as a symbolic structure rather than a list of independent placements. That means synthesis matters more than memorizing dozens of definitions.

For a practical reading order, see how to interpret a natal chart.

7. Transits: the changing sky compared with the natal chart

A transit compares a planet’s current position with the natal chart. This adds a time dimension to astrology.

For example, transiting Saturn forming a square to natal Venus may be interpreted through themes involving responsibility, limits, values or relationships. That does not guarantee a breakup, financial problem or specific event. It describes a symbolic period that is interpreted in context.

Two people can experience the same type of transit very differently because their charts, circumstances and choices differ.

For more detail, continue with our guide to astrology transits.

How the pieces fit together: one example

Imagine someone with Mars in Virgo in the 10th house, square Saturn.

  • Mars tells us the symbolic function: action, assertion and drive.
  • Virgo describes the style: analytical, refining, practical.
  • 10th house locates the theme: public direction, achievement or vocation.
  • Saturn square Mars adds a relationship between action and restraint, pressure, responsibility or endurance.

A useful synthesis might ask how this person handles pressure to perform accurately, how they respond to obstacles, and whether discipline becomes a resource or excessive self-control.

The chart does not need to produce a verdict. It gives a structure for asking more precise questions.

What astrology can — and cannot — tell you

  • It can provide a symbolic language for themes, tensions and cycles.
  • It can help structure reflection and comparison.
  • It can offer an interpretive framework for timing and self-observation.
  • It cannot scientifically establish personality from a birth chart.
  • It cannot guarantee specific future events.
  • It should not replace medical, psychological, legal or financial advice.

A beginner’s learning order

  1. Learn the twelve signs through elements and modalities.
  2. Learn the planetary functions.
  3. Understand the Ascendant and houses.
  4. Learn the five major aspects.
  5. Read a natal chart as a whole.
  6. Add transits only after the natal structure is clear.
  7. Practice synthesis instead of collecting labels.

The AstroSpirit approach: learn the system before chasing predictions

Astrology is more coherent when its parts are understood in relation to one another. A Sun sign alone is not a whole person, a planet alone is not a whole chart, and a transit alone is not a guaranteed event.

The useful sequence is simple: learn the symbols, understand the structure, then build interpretation through synthesis.

That makes astrology less about collecting dramatic predictions and more about reading a symbolic system with patience, nuance and context.

Astrology basics in one formula

LayerSimple question
PlanetWhat symbolic function is involved?
SignHow is it expressed?
HouseWhere does it show up?
AspectHow does it interact with other functions?
TransitWhat part of the natal chart is being activated now?

This page is the overview. For detailed interpretation, each layer has its own guide. Keeping those roles separate prevents the beginner mistake of treating a single placement as if it explained an entire chart.

A beginner’s reading sequence

  1. Confirm birth data and calculate the chart.
  2. Read the Ascendant, chart ruler, Sun and Moon.
  3. Add planets by sign and house.
  4. Read the major aspects.
  5. Only then move to transits or other timing techniques.

Frequently asked questions about astrology basics

What are the main parts of astrology?

The main building blocks of a natal chart are planets, zodiac signs, houses, angles such as the Ascendant and Midheaven, and aspects. Forecasting techniques such as transits add a time dimension.

What is the difference between a sign and a planet?

A planet represents a symbolic function, while the sign describes the style through which that function is expressed.

What is the Ascendant?

The Ascendant, or rising sign, is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact time and place of birth. In many Western systems it anchors the house structure and identifies the chart ruler.

What is the best order for learning astrology?

A practical order is signs, planets, Ascendant and houses, aspects, full natal-chart synthesis, then transits and other timing techniques.
