Astrology transits: how to read planetary movements 🎧

In astrology, a transit compares the current position of a planet with your natal chart. A moving planet can form an aspect to a natal planet or angle, or move through a natal house. Astrologers use these contacts to describe periods in which certain themes may become more noticeable.

That does not mean a transit “causes” a specific event. A Saturn transit does not guarantee hardship, and a Jupiter transit does not guarantee luck. A more useful approach is to treat transits as symbolic timing tools: they can help you frame questions, notice recurring themes, and reflect on how you are responding to a particular period.

What is a transit in astrology?

A natal chart is a snapshot of planetary positions for a particular date, time, and place. The planets keep moving after birth. A transit occurs when a current planetary position forms a meaningful relationship with a factor in the natal chart.

Transit typeWhat astrologers compare
Planet to natal planetA moving planet forms an aspect to a natal planet
Planet to angleA moving planet reaches the Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant or IC
Planet through a houseA moving planet crosses one of the natal houses
ReturnA planet returns to the same zodiacal position it occupied at birth

Why the orb matters

An aspect does not need to be mathematically exact before astrologers begin to interpret it. The allowed distance from exactitude is called the orb.

There is no single universal orb used by every school. For transits, many practitioners work more tightly than they would in a natal chart, especially with slow-moving planets. The key principle is simple: the closer the transit is to exact, the more astrologers tend to emphasize it.

Fast transits and slow transits do not work on the same timescale

The Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars move relatively quickly through the zodiac. Their contacts with natal positions are correspondingly brief. Jupiter and especially Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto can remain close to the same natal degree for much longer.

Planetary speedTypical astrological use
Fast-moving planetsShort-lived moods, conversations, initiatives or triggers
Jupiter and SaturnLonger developmental cycles and periods of restructuring or expansion
Uranus, Neptune and PlutoSlow background processes interpreted over months or years

This is why a one-day Mercury transit should not be interpreted in the same way as Pluto remaining within a narrow orb of a natal planet for many months.

Why the same transit can become exact more than once

Because planets periodically appear to move retrograde from Earth, a transiting planet can cross the same natal degree, move back across it, and then cross it again after turning direct.

Astrologers often treat these repeated contacts as chapters of the same symbolic process rather than as three unrelated predictions. A first pass may bring a theme into awareness, the retrograde pass may invite review, and the final direct pass may coincide with a later stage of the process. That sequence is an interpretive convention, not a guaranteed event pattern.

How to read a transit without becoming deterministic

  1. Name the transiting planet. What function does it symbolize in your astrological framework?
  2. Identify the natal factor. Is it touching the Sun, Moon, Venus, an angle or another point?
  3. Check the aspect and orb. Is the contact applying, exact or separating?
  4. Look at the house. Which area of the chart is being emphasized?
  5. Check whether the transit repeats. Retrograde motion can create several exact contacts.
  6. Compare symbolism with real life. What is actually happening, and what is not?

Example: Saturn transiting the natal Sun

A deterministic reading might say: “Saturn brings hardship.” A more useful reading asks what Saturn symbolizes in the system being used: structure, limits, time, responsibility, consolidation. The natal Sun concerns identity, direction and conscious self-expression.

The transit can therefore become a prompt: Where am I being asked to define priorities more clearly? What requires patience, commitment or simplification? One person may experience this through work, another through family responsibilities, another through an internal reassessment. The chart alone does not tell you which concrete event must occur.

Example: Jupiter transiting the natal Moon

Jupiter is traditionally associated with growth, breadth, confidence and meaning; the Moon with needs, habits and emotional security. Instead of predicting “emotional abundance and luck,” a nuanced interpretation might ask whether the period encourages a broader emotional perspective, increased generosity, new family experiences or simply a stronger desire for comfort and expansion.

The same symbolism can be expressed constructively or excessively. Expansion can mean opportunity, but it can also mean overdoing, overpromising or taking on more than you can comfortably sustain.

Do transits predict events?

Astrological traditions have long used transits as forecasting techniques. But a transit should not be confused with a scientifically established causal mechanism. The astronomical positions can be calculated precisely; the meaning attributed to those positions belongs to astrology.

That distinction matters. A transit can be used as a reflective calendar, but it should not replace medical, legal, financial or relationship decisions based on real-world evidence.

What you’ll learn in this podcast

  • what a transit is and how it relates to the natal chart;
  • the difference between fast and slow planetary transits;
  • why orbs and exact contacts matter;
  • how retrograde motion can create repeated transit passes;
  • how to read Saturn, Jupiter and other transits without turning them into fixed predictions.

If you want to follow along with your own chart, you can start with the astroSpirit birth chart calculator and note the exact degrees of your natal planets and angles.

How to read a transit in practice

A transit becomes useful only when four pieces are kept together: the transiting planet, the natal planet or angle it contacts, the aspect between them, and the houses involved. “Saturn transit” by itself is too vague.

LayerQuestion to ask
Transiting planetWhat kind of symbolic process is moving through the chart?
Natal factorWhich part of the birth chart is being activated?
AspectHow direct, tense or flowing is the contact?
House axisIn which life areas does the transit become most visible?
DurationIs this a brief trigger or a long developmental cycle?

This is also why slow planets matter differently from fast ones. A Moon or Mercury transit can be brief; Saturn, Uranus, Neptune or Pluto may remain in contact for months, often with several exact passes because of retrogradation.

Transit vs natal placement: do not mix the two

A natal placement belongs to the birth chart and stays fixed. A transit describes a current planetary position in relation to that chart. For example, “natal Saturn in the 7th house” and “transiting Saturn square Venus” are two different interpretive layers.

Frequently asked questions about astrology transits

What is a transit in astrology?

A transit compares the current position of a moving planet with planets, angles or houses in a natal chart.

Why can the same transit happen more than once?

Retrograde motion can cause a planet to cross the same natal degree several times before finally moving on.

What is an orb in transit astrology?

The orb is the allowed distance from the exact aspect. Different astrologers and schools use different orb sizes.

Can a transit predict exactly what will happen?

No. Astrology can frame symbolic themes and timing, but it cannot reliably determine one specific event that must occur.
